How to Survive a Pandemic

A pandemic is the worldwide spread of a new disease, one that most humans don’t have immunity to.

We have been facing lately the H1N1 virus, which is an influenza pandemic (originated from an animal). This article aims to give you actionable tips to survive a pandemic.

Before a Pandemic

Acting strategically while you still have the freedom of movement without risk is essential in any survival situation. Planning and storage are your best friends in this period.

  • Store water and foods, Not having to go out regularly for these when the pandemic strikes are going to make your life easier and safer.
  • Store your medication and a first aid kit, this is important in any survival situation, be ready to clean and heal wounds while waiting for help.
  • Keep copies of your medical records to ease the work of the medics in case you are touched by the virus.
  • Explain to your family members the situation and what they have to do. Being prepared alone is counterproductive when you live in a group, everybody has to be on the same wavelength.

During a Pandemic

At this stage, the virus is circulating and will get to anyone within its range of action. Your mission is to prevent this from happening and to limit the spread of germs.

  • Avoid close contact with sick people and strangers, the virus can travel in many ways.
  • Wash your hands often to keep the germs away.
  • If you get sick, keep your distance from the others to protect them from the virus. Don’t help spread the disease.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Orifices are a direct gate for any bacteria into your body.
  • Keep a healthy health habit by having enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, eating nutritious food and practicing physical activity. Strengthening your immune system is crucial to survive a pandemic.

Despite the advancement in technology and medicine, viruses have never been able to travel so fast in human history.

Crowded cities and the ability to travel faster to any place in the world made us all vulnerable to these viruses, even if they are originated in the furthest places. So stay prepared.
